Text Cleaners

Remove duplicates, whitespace, and unwanted characters — 6 free tools in our Text Tools category.

Text arrives messy. Copying out of a PDF inserts a line break at the end of every visual line. Merging two exports leaves duplicate rows. Pasting from a web page brings the markup with it. These tools handle the cleanup steps that would otherwise mean a hand-written script or a lot of manual editing.

Which tool for which mess

Remove Duplicate Lines keeps the first occurrence of each line and discards the rest, preserving your original order. Use it on merged mailing lists, URL collections and log files.

Remove Line Breaks rejoins text that has been hard-wrapped. This is the fix for PDF and email copy-paste, where the breaks are an artefact of layout rather than meaning.

Sort Lines orders a list alphabetically, numerically or by length. Note that numeric sorting is a distinct option: alphabetical sorting puts 10 before 2, because it compares character by character.

Find and Replace handles targeted substitutions across a whole document, with optional regular expressions and whole-word matching for when a plain search would also hit substrings.

Strip HTML Tags extracts readable text from markup, discarding script and style contents rather than leaving CSS and JavaScript behind as visible text.

Text Diff compares two versions and highlights what changed, at line or character level.

Work non-destructively

Every one of these transformations is easy to apply too broadly — a find-and-replace pattern that matches more than you intended, or a deduplication that was case-insensitive when it should not have been. Keep the original text until you have checked the result, and use Text Diff to confirm that only what you intended actually changed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are two identical-looking lines not treated as duplicates?▼

Almost always an invisible difference: a trailing space, a tab instead of spaces, different capitalisation, or a Windows carriage return at the end of the line. Enable trim-whitespace and case-insensitive comparison and they will match.

Is stripping HTML tags enough to make user input safe?▼

No. Treat it as a convenience for extracting readable text, not a security control. Removing tags in the browser is not a defence against cross-site scripting — sanitise on the server with a maintained library and escape according to the context you are outputting into.

Can I clean a large file with these tools?▼

There is no fixed limit, because everything runs locally in your browser. The practical ceiling is your device's memory, and lists in the tens of thousands of lines process essentially instantly. Nothing is uploaded, so file size does not depend on a network transfer.
