What is Discount Calculator?

A discount calculator determines the final price after applying one or more percentage discounts, and shows how much money you save. It handles single discounts (30% off), sequential discounts (20% off then additional 10% off — which is NOT the same as 30% off), and calculates savings in both percentage and absolute terms. This is the tool shoppers reach for during sales events, coupon stacking, and when comparing deals across different stores to find the actual best price.

How It Works

Enter the original price and discount percentage. The tool calculates: discount amount = original price × (discount/100), and final price = original price - discount amount. For sequential (stacked) discounts, each discount is applied to the already-reduced price — so 20% off $100 = $80, then 10% off $80 = $72 (not $70 as simple addition would suggest). The tool clearly shows each step and the effective total discount percentage, helping you understand exactly what you're paying and saving.

Tips & Best Practices

💡

Sequential discounts multiply, they don't add. Two 30% discounts = 51% total discount, not 60%.

💡

'Up to X% off' in retail usually means only select items get the maximum discount. Most items get much less.

💡

To find the original price from a discounted price: divide by (1 - discount%). $70 after 30% off = $70 / 0.70 = $100.

Common Use Cases

  • Calculating final prices during sales to compare deals across different stores
  • Understanding the true savings when stores advertise 'additional X% off sale prices'
  • Figuring out the effective discount when stacking multiple coupon codes or promotions
  • Comparing percentage-off deals vs fixed-amount deals to determine which saves more
  • Calculating wholesale pricing tiers when different quantities get different discount levels
  • Understanding the real value of 'buy one get one 50% off' and similar promotional offers

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate the final price?

Final price = Original price × (1 - discount/100). For example, $100 with 20% off = $80.
