What is GST Calculator?

A GST (Goods and Services Tax) calculator computes the tax component of prices in India, showing the breakdown between CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST) or IGST (Integrated GST for interstate transactions). India's GST has multiple rate slabs — 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28% — applied to different categories of goods and services. This tool calculates both GST-inclusive (adding tax to a base price) and GST-exclusive (extracting tax from a total price) amounts, essential for invoicing, accounting, and pricing decisions.

How It Works

Enter an amount and select the GST rate (5%, 12%, 18%, or 28%). For GST-inclusive calculation: GST amount = base price × (rate/100), total = base price + GST. For GST-exclusive (reverse calculation): base price = total / (1 + rate/100), GST = total - base price. For intra-state transactions, the tool splits GST equally into CGST and SGST (each being half the total GST rate). For interstate transactions, the full amount is IGST. Results show all components clearly for invoice preparation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between CGST and SGST?▼

CGST goes to the central government and SGST to the state government. Both are equal halves of the total GST.

How do I remove GST from an inclusive price?▼

Divide by (1 + rate), do not subtract the percentage. At 18%, a ₹1,180 inclusive price has a base of 1,180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,000 and GST of ₹180. Subtracting 18% from ₹1,180 gives ₹967.60, which is wrong.

What are the current GST slabs?▼

The principal rates are 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%, with 0% for exempt items and special rates for gold and rough diamonds. Certain goods in the 28% band also attract a compensation cess. Classification determines the rate and is the usual source of disputes.

When does CGST plus SGST apply rather than IGST?▼

Intra-state supplies split the total equally between central and state GST, so 18% becomes 9% CGST plus 9% SGST. Inter-state supplies attract IGST at the full 18% instead, which the centre later apportions. The total borne by the customer is identical either way.

What is the reverse charge mechanism?▼

An arrangement where the recipient rather than the supplier accounts for the GST, used for specified goods and services and for certain purchases from unregistered suppliers. The recipient pays the tax directly to the government and may claim input credit subject to the usual conditions.

Who needs to register for GST?▼

Registration is mandatory above an annual turnover threshold — commonly ₹40 lakh for goods and ₹20 lakh for services, with lower limits in special category states — and irrespective of turnover for inter-state suppliers, e-commerce operators and those liable under reverse charge. Confirm the threshold applying to your state and activity.
