URL Slug Generator

Generate clean, SEO-friendly URL slugs from text. Options for separator, lowercase, stop word removal, and max length.

What is Slug Generator?

A URL slug generator converts page titles, article headlines, and product names into clean, SEO-friendly URL segments. A good URL slug is lowercase, uses hyphens between words, removes special characters, eliminates stop words (a, the, is, and), and keeps the total length manageable. Clean URLs improve SEO (Google prefers readable URLs), user experience (people can understand the page content from the URL), and shareability (clean URLs look professional when shared on social media or in emails).

How It Works

Enter a title or phrase and the tool transforms it: converts to lowercase, replaces spaces with hyphens, removes punctuation and special characters, optionally removes common stop words, transliterates accented characters (é → e, ñ → n), collapses multiple consecutive hyphens, and trims to a configurable maximum length. The result is a clean, readable URL segment that works across all web servers and browsers without encoding issues.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a good URL slug?▼

Short, descriptive, lowercase, uses hyphens, contains the target keyword, and avoids stop words.

Should I use hyphens or underscores in a URL?▼

Hyphens. Google has stated it treats a hyphen as a word separator and an underscore as a word joiner, so `red-shoes` reads as two words while `red_shoes` can be read as one. Hyphens are also the near-universal convention, which matters for user expectations.

How long should a slug be?▼

Three to five meaningful words is a good target. Short slugs are easier to read, share and remember, and they survive being displayed in search results without truncation. Dropping stop words like "a", "the" and "of" usually shortens a slug without losing meaning.

How are accented and non-Latin characters handled?▼

They are transliterated to their closest ASCII equivalent, so "café" becomes "cafe" and "Müller" becomes "muller". Non-Latin scripts can technically be used directly via percent-encoding, but the encoded form is unreadable when copied, so transliteration is normally preferable.

Should slugs be lowercase?▼

Yes. URL paths are case-sensitive on most servers, so `/About` and `/about` are two different addresses that can both be indexed as duplicates. Forcing lowercase everywhere removes that whole class of problem.

Should I change an existing slug?▼

Only with good reason, and always with a 301 redirect from the old URL. Changing a slug breaks every existing link and shared reference, and without the redirect you discard the ranking signals those links carried. Avoid putting dates or years in slugs precisely so you do not need to change them later.
