For total counts, it uses precise millisecond arithmetic: total days = difference in milliseconds / (1000 × 60 × 60 × 24). Is the end date included in the count?▼
By default the result is exclusive, counting the nights between the two dates: 1 March to 3 March is two days. Contracts, hotel stays and notice periods are often inclusive, which gives three. Decide which convention your situation needs, because off-by-one errors here have real consequences.
How do I count working days rather than calendar days?▼
Exclude weekends, and remember public holidays vary by country and often by region, so no single calculation fits everyone. As a rough guide a calendar year contains about 260 weekdays, from which you subtract your local holidays.
Why is the number of months between two dates ambiguous?▼
Because months are different lengths. From 31 January to 28 February is one month by calendar reckoning but 28 days, whereas 1 March to 31 March is 30 days and still less than a month. Any "months" figure is a calendar count, not a fixed number of days.
