What is GPA Calculator?

A GPA (Grade Point Average) calculator computes your cumulative or semester GPA based on course grades and credit hours. GPA is calculated as the sum of (grade points × credit hours) divided by total credit hours, weighted so that higher-credit courses have proportionally more impact on your average. This tool handles both semester calculations and cumulative GPA updates, supporting the standard 4.0 scale used by most US universities and many international institutions.

How It Works

Enter each course's letter grade (A through F, with +/- variants) and credit hours. The tool converts letter grades to grade points (A=4.0, A-=3.7, B+=3.3, etc.), multiplies each by credit hours for quality points, sums all quality points, and divides by total credit hours. For cumulative GPA, you can enter your existing GPA and total credits alongside new courses to see how the semester affects your overall average. The weighted calculation ensures a 4-credit A impacts your GPA more than a 1-credit A.

Common Use Cases

  • Calculating semester GPA to track academic progress and standing requirements
  • Predicting cumulative GPA after upcoming semester based on expected grades
  • Determining what grades are needed in remaining courses to achieve a target GPA
  • Verifying official transcript GPA calculations for accuracy before applications
  • Planning course loads to understand how dropping a low grade affects overall GPA
  • Converting between 4.0 scale and percentage-based grading systems for international applications
